At the foot of the cathedral hill there is the Old Town, the biggest area monument of the “New Laender” (former GDR state) with many historical buildings from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The original period of the architecture is best represented on the “Anger”, Erfurt’s most popular area. Due to extensive reconstruction measures most of the monuments presented themselves in their full beauty already in 1992 as part of the city’s 1250th anniversary celebrations.
